Aubrey's Dudley by Dex

owned by Tim and Emma Christchurch

Hi everyone,
I thought it was about time we introduced Boudu (née Dudley). Boudu (pronounced Bhor-duu – like Bordeaux, but ending in 'oo' rather than 'oh') takes his name from the 1932 French film Boudu Saved From Drowning (directed by Jean Renoir), in which an unruly, bearded tramp named Boudu is rescued from the Seine by a bourgeois man following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Boudu proceeds to demolish the man's home, steal his breakfasts, and sleep with his maid. We thought that such a namesake was befitting a mischievous Briard.

Boudu has settled in extremely well to his new home in Mount Pleasant, Christchurch. With absolutely no encouragement on our part, Boudu asks to go out to the toilet, and, with the aid of a handful of treats and an overly-enthusiastic 'good boy!' or two we have been able to teach him some basic tricks: come, sit, shake, down, and speak. We had hoped to get him in to puppy school a couple of weeks ago, but it seems that they're all booked up; however, he is scheduled to start next week. With any luck, he'll be capable of solving differential equations before long enough (though I will consider the classes a success if he stops biting my hands and ankles!).

We've still got another round of injections to go before we're allowed to take him out, and it has been tough resisting the urge to take him exploring. It's likely that the beach at Sumner will be his stomping ground, so if any of you happen across a young couple chasing a big, naughty Briard up and down the beach, do say hi.
